Glossary

Trading card terminology can be confusing, and some of the terms on this site carry specific meanings. This glossary covers the key concepts behind how debut cards are identified and tracked. For the full research process, see the Methodology page.

Core Concepts

Debut Card / Rookie Card / 1st Appearance Card

A card from the first trading card set to feature a specific character or actor. The key word is set — every card of that character or actor within the debut set counts as a debut card, not just a single card. These three terms mean the same thing and are used interchangeably on this site.

Primary Debut Card

When a debut set contains multiple cards of the same character or actor, one is selected as the primary debut — the card featured on the site. See Methodology for the full selection criteria.

Debut Set

The first trading card set, by verified release date, to include a specific character or actor. This is where the debut card comes from. Release dates are verified against multiple sources to ensure accuracy.

Character Card

A card showing a hero or villain in costume — for example, Spider-Man, Captain America, or Black Panther. This is distinct from an alter ego card of the same person.

Alter Ego Card

A card showing the actor out of costume in their civilian identity — for example, Peter Parker, Steve Rogers, or T'Challa. Both the character card and the alter ego card are tracked as separate debut cards because they represent different collecting milestones.

Honorable Mention

A designation for edge cases where a second card deserves attention alongside the primary debut — typically a promo card released just before the base set, a rare variant, or an alternate card that tells a different part of the story. The pack-pulled base set card remains the official debut; the honorable mention is called out separately on the set and character pages.

First Serialized Card

The first numbered or limited print run card for a character or actor — for example, a card stamped /999 or /50. A character's debut card and first serialized card often come from different sets. This site tracks both as separate collecting milestones.

Card Types

Base Card

A card from the main numbered checklist included in every pack — the most common cards in a set.

Insert / Chase Card

A bonus card from a themed subset inserted into packs at a lower rate than base cards, with its own design and numbering.

Parallel Card

A rarer version of a base or insert card — different border, foil, or serial numbering, but same image and card number.

Serialized Card

Any card with a printed serial number indicating a limited print run (e.g., 042/999). The lower the print run, the rarer the card.

Promo Card

A card distributed outside of packs — at conventions, in magazines, or as a retailer incentive. May be flagged as an honorable mention when it predates the base set.
